Organic Farming: Can It Feed Us? Part 1

Karl Grossman Chief Investigative Reporter examines Organic Farming on Eastern Long Island.

What is organic farming?
Organic farming can be defined as an approach to agriculture where the aim is to create integrated, humane, environmentally and economically sustainable agricultural production systems. Maximum reliance is placed on locally or farm-derived renewable resources and the management of self-regulating ecological and biological processes and interactions in order to provide acceptable levels of crop, livestock and human nutrition, protection from pests and diseases, and an appropriate return to the human and other resources employed. Reliance on external inputs, whether chemical or organic, is reduced as far as possible. In many European countries, organic agriculture is known as ecological agriculture, reflecting this reliance on ecosystem management rather than external inputs.

The objective of sustainability lies at the heart of organic farming and is one of the major factors determining the acceptability or otherwise of specific production practices. The term ’sustainable’ is used in its widest sense, to encompass not just conservation of non-renewable resources (soil, energy, minerals) but also issues of environmental, economic and social sustainability. The term ‘organic’ is best thought of as referring to the concept of the farm as an organism, in which all the component parts - the soil minerals, organic matter, micro-organisms, insects, plants, animals and humans - interact to create a coherent and stable whole.

The key characteristics of organic farming include:

protecting the long term fertility of soils by maintaining organic matter levels, encouraging soil biological activity, and careful mechanical intervention;

providing crop nutrients indirectly using relatively insoluble nutrient sources which are made available to the plant by the action of soil micro-organisms;

nitrogen self-sufficiency through the use of legumes and biological nitrogen fixation, as well as effective recycling of organic materials including crop residues and livestock manures;

weed, disease and pest control relying primarily on crop rotations, natural predators, diversity, organic manuring, resistant varieties and limited (preferably minimal) thermal, biological and chemical intervention;

the extensive management of livestock, paying full regard to their evolutionary adaptations, behavioural needs and animal welfare issues with respect to nutrition, housing, health, breeding and rearing;

careful attention to the impact of the farming system on the wider environment and the conservation of wildlife and natural habitats.

Blur - Country House

Posted on November 16th, 2008 by admin

Blur
Country House
The Great Escape

LYRICS

(so the story begins)
City dweller
Successful fella
Thought to himself:
oops, Ive got a lot of money
Caught in a rat race
Terminally
Im a professional cynic
But my hearts not in it
Im paying the price of living life at the limit
Caught up in the centurys anxiety

Yes, it preys on him
Hes getting thin
(try the simple life)

He lives in a house
A very big house
In the country
Watching afternoon repeats
And the food he eats
In the country
He takes all manner of pills
And piles up analyst bills
In the country
Oh, its like an animal farm
Thats the rural charm
In the country

Hes got morning glory and lifes a different story
Everythings going jackanory
Touched with his own mortality
Hes reading balzac, knocking back prozac
Its a helping hand that makes you feel wonderfully bland
Oh, its a centurys remedy
For the faint at heart
A new start
(try the simple life)

He lives in a house
A very big house
In the country
Hes got a fog in his chest
So he needs a lot of rest
In the country
He doesnt drink, smoke, laugh
Takes herbal baths
In the country
You should come to no harm
On the animal farm
In the country

why isnt my 89 toyota 4×4 4cyl automatic downshifting when i put the pedal to the floor?

Posted on November 15th, 2008 by admin

i adjusted the kickdown cable.tightened the throttle cable changed the filter.added lucas fluid.it will downshift sometimes .usually when i first run it.if i operate the cable by hand i hear it working.

How about a REAL answer….

This happens to me all the time. Pull the floor mat out.

Chances are it's bunched up behind the pedals and you can't push it down far enough to activate the kickdown switch

Ordinarily I would suggest a vacuum line leak but if I recall the 86 and up toyotas have electronic transmissions.

Posted on November 15th, 2008 by admin

I have always felt drawn to helping the planet :D I want to start living a life more connected to nature. A life that will help Earth heal itself and all of creation :D What are some stuff I can do to Help the Planet out more and to get my desired lifestyle on track ? :D Thanks to all

Love Light and Peace :D

Bravo for You! One of the key places to start is right in your own home.
Get rid of all your household products that contain hazardous chemicals. By switching to green cleaner’s and personal care products you will stop flushing chemicals into the environment through your own personal household waste. Use natural, non-toxic, biodegradable and concentrated products which will also reduce the amount of packaging going into landfills. Use supplements that are natural and sourced from sustainable resources in your nutrition routine. Use a water purification unit instead of buying bottled water to reduce packaging going into the landfills.

My Children’s Hair Care-II

Posted on November 15th, 2008 by admin

Nina loves to create sweet, simple hairstyles on her children’s hair. . Neither girl likes to sit for a long time in one place; neither do I. That is why all our styles are very quick and easy.

All hair is good hair. We feel hair is a blessing and it should be taken care of.

Many people have inquired about our daughters and their hair texture. Both have different hair textures. Actually, it’s hard to find siblings with identical hair textures.

Our 10-year old has fine (not thick) hair and it’s wavy. Her hair doesn’t kink up or curl up tightly. After washing, the ends have large ringlets and the rest of the hair has a loose wave. If I brush it until it air dries, it will be straight.

The baby, our 6-year old, has thick, super thick hair. Though it’s thick, it isn’t kinky or coarse; however;it is curly. The curls are about 3/4″ in diameter or larger. Her hair bounces and bounces and goes back into place. Her hair is past the shoulders in it’s curly state, when wet, it’s to the middle of her back. As her hair grows, we are noticing the curls are relaxing a bit because of the weight.

We make caring for their hair fun. I have instructed the girls not to flaunt hair, that isn’t becoming for a young lady, nor pleasing to God. I have also told them to be thankful for it and care for it daily to maintain it and grow it.

The secret to healthy hair begins with the inside. What we do, what we eat can have an effect on the condition of our hair. Stress immediately effects hair. For some, it thins, other people notice breakage. Try to keep your life uncluttered and simplify in whatever area of your life you can.

Healthy hair is the goal!

I do not apply any texture altering chemicals or heat to their hair. In my personal experience, I feel most children do best with natural hair texture. Chemicals can ruin a child’s delicate hair and heat should only be used on rare occasions when you want to do something formal (weddings,pagaents,Quincinera, etc).

Some people have had wonderful results with chemicals, but, I won’t take that chance with my children.

We don’t cut hair, we only trim ends to preserve the condition. That is only done as needed.

I love trying new styles on my children. I like to teach them how to manage their hair.

My children have yet to visit a salon. Perhaps someday, I will take them there to get a wet set. But, as of right now, we do everything at home.

Nice, friendly questions and comments are always welcome!
